Quayside Quayside holiday houses is approx 200M from the harbour side and a very short level walk to The Quay, Park and Shops. Ideally suited for those who want to leave the car behind and do a little easy walking and take in the harbour views. There are cycle and footpaths along the waters edge and around the town, these are all very well signposted. More information can be found on the www.Pooletourism.com website. Poole Poole and its surrounding area is full of interesting things to do and see. The harbour is a mecca for all water-sports from sailing small and large craft, sail/kite boarding and jet-skiing etc. There are numerous places to hire boats of all types (with skipper and also bareboat) or just take one of the many harbour and coastal cruises and let someone else take the strain. There are many islands inside Poole harbour, most are privately owned, however Brownsea Island is owned by the NT and regular ferries run from Poole quay during the season. Brownsea Island is the home of the first Boy Scout campsite, started by Lord Baden Powell. Troops of scouts and guides come from all over the world to stay on the island. It is also the home of one of the only Red Squirrel colonies in the south of England. Brownsea island is a beautiful day out, the peace and tranquility of this unique setting makes this island well worth a visit.. Stately Homes and Gardens There are many gardens and NT houses to visit within easy reach of Poole, either by car or on one of the many coach/bus trips. Kingston Lacey (Nr Wimborne), Corfe Castle on the Purbecks and many many more (see the www.Pooletourism.com for more details. Places to visit. Compton Acres, Stapehill, Knoll Gardens. Bird and Wildlife Poole Harbour and the surrounding area is alive with bird and animal life. We have a large and increasing colony of "Little Egret" nesting on Brownsea Island and the surrounding harbour areas. There are tern, redshank, oyster catchers, curlew and many rare visitors. On the heath land nearby we have the beautiful Dartford Warbler, blackcap and many birds of prey. It is a haven for the birdwatcher and there are many hides and vantage points erected in the area by the NT and the RSPB to help the beginner. Places to visit. Arne (RSPB), Upton Country Park, Brownsea Island, Studland (N.T.), Durlston Country Park (Swanage), Badbury Rings, Kingston Lacey Estate (N.T.) Going out Poole has a very active social life with many excellent places to eat and drink both through the day and evening. There is a very popular arts centre where live music, plays and shows are staged with national and international stars. Close by at Tower Park there is a multi screen Cinema, Splashdown, restaurants, nightclub etc. Special events At various time through the year we have a street market on the quay. Some are "Farmers Markets" and once a year from our twin town of Cherbourg in Normandy . This gives the quay a very continental feel. There are numerous boating events taking place in and outside the harbour almost any day during the season. Youth afloat week in August is designed to get young people interested in all aspects of the sea in a safe and controlled environment. They get a chance to sail water-ski, sailboard, canoe and get some good tuition at the same time. Poole hosts the Offshore Powerboat Racing in July and get a chance to get a close up of the monster craft. In the high season there are firework displays on some evenings at about 10:00PM. timed to the arrival of the Brittany Ferry returning from France. "Biker Night" on Tuesday on the Quay will give you a chance to see almost every motorcycle, old and new, that has very been made. The motorcyclists are all there to show off their bikes to all that are interested. This is a good family night out with lots of activity and lots to see.
